26 Aug Grimbsy landlord who put profits before tenant’s safety is jailed
Mr Keith Newsum, a landlord from Grimsby, has been fined £100,000 and handed a five-month jail sentence after putting profits ahead of the safety of his tenants.
Mr Newsum admitted to numerous offences including failings including having an insufficient fire risk assessment, failing to have his premise equipped with the appropriate fire detectors and alarms, lack of self-closing fire doors, having fire doors wedged open as well as lack of general fire precautions. It was discovered that the landlord also lied to police regarding the fire safety within the premise.
The court heard how Mr Newsum was purely money orientated with anything that he had carried out being extremely inadequate. It was only due to the actions of the residents which allowed the residents to escape unscathed, or there could have been serious consequences.
